Addis Ababa -is the capital city of Ethiopia, situated at an elevation of 2450 meters above sea level and an estimated population of 5 millions. Founded as a capital city in 1887 by Emperor Menelik II, it became the starting place of modernism following the introduction of western technological products like -the first ever railway system built by the Frenchmen, the first modern hospital by the Russian missionaries, the arrival of the first mechanical vehicle, electricity, water pipe system...and money more. Today, the fastly grown and expanded city is serving as the seat for the Africa Union and more than 90 diplomatic consulates. Also, the historical part of the capital is well detailed and kept alive inside its different museums.
Detailed Itinerary:
09:00 AM -Leave the hotel on a trip to discover what is all about this historical city, to be starting from the National museum.
09:30 AM -Arrival to the National museum; which is the first museum built in Ethiopia with a collection of various antiquities displaying -archeological and paleoanthropological discoveries from the three sites located within the Great Rift Valley, crowns and ceremonial dresses worn by different Ethiopian kings from the past, religious and modern contemporary paintings, and locally made traditional household stuffs describing the multiethnic diversity of the country.
**Proceed on a drive to the Entoto mountain.
11:00 AM -Upon reaching to the Entoto mountain (the highest peak in Addis Ababa, at an altitude of 3200 meters above sea level) -visit the oldest palace of Emperor Menelik II having been built during the earlier years of 1880's and the Entoto Saint Mary church museum built in a plan of displaying some of the royal family belongings. On the way back from the top of the mountain, a short stopover taking a chance to have a widely opened view over the capital city.
**Proceeding to a suggested restaurant for a lunch break.
12:30 AM -Checking in to a restaurant and having a lunch break.
**Proceed on a drive to the Holy Trinity cathedral.
02:00 PM -Arrival to the Holy Trinity cathedral -an Ethiopian Orthodox religion church built during the late 1930's and considered to be the second ranking official worship center for the Ethiopian Orthodox church synods. The church has also a burial place reserved mainly for important religious figures, highly ranking government officials, famous artists, and military legends.
**Proceed on a drive to Merkato.
03:30 PM -After a drive through the oldest center of Addis Ababa namely Piasa (named by the Italians, as they have used the place during the years 1937 to 1941 for residential and official purposes), will be reaching for a final visit to Merkato -the biggest open market in Africa, at the beginning been occupied by the Arab merchants and later on handed over completely to the Ethiopian merchants sometime during the 1960's (on an effort to encourage the local merchants and boost the economy of the country). The market is a place where to find any agricultural and industrial produces, within the 72 market sections.
05:00 PM -A drive back to the hotel marks the end of this well informative full day city tour of Addis Ababa.
